Husqvarna Automower 315: an older mower buying guide
First published in 2016. Substantially updated on 1 October 2026. This guide is based on manufacturer documentation, not a hands-on test.
The original Husqvarna Automower 315 can still interest someone buying a used robot mower, but it needs a different assessment from a new machine. Start with the mower’s identity, condition and suitability for your lawn, then compare the full installed cost with a current model.
Husqvarna marks the original 315 as discontinued on its UK support page. That does not tell you whether an individual dealer has old stock or whether a particular used mower is a good buy. This page retains its original 315 focus; the newer models below provide buying context.

Identify the exact 315 before comparing specifications
Ask for the article number and manufacturing year from the product label. The original 315, 315X and 315 Mark II are different models. Our original article named 967623405; the UK/Irish support entry for 967623403 lists a nominal 1,500 m² working area. Do not transfer regional specifications or included accessories between listings just because both say “315”.
For that UK/Irish variant, the stated slope limit is 40% inside the installation and 15% at the boundary. A percentage is not an angle in degrees: 40% means a rise of 40 cm over 1 m horizontally. The lower boundary limit matters when the lawn ends on a slope.
Will it suit your garden?
The original 315 uses a boundary wire and guide wire. It is not installed by simply entering coordinates, as our earlier article suggested. The 310/315/315X operator’s manual explains the installation; select the edition matching your machine through the support page.
Before requesting a quote, measure the grass and sketch narrow passages, separate lawns, steep edges, ponds, steps and the charging position. Ask the installer to explain which areas the mower can reach, which hazards need physical protection and where you will still need to trim. An area rating alone cannot settle those questions.
Checks before buying used
- See it working: ask for a demonstration of mowing and returning to its charging station. A photograph cannot establish battery condition.
- Check what is included: mower, matching station, power supply and installation materials. Price missing parts before agreeing a deal.
- Ask about ownership and servicing: request proof of purchase, service records and a demonstration that the seller can unlock and operate the machine. Arrange any account transfer through the proper manufacturer process.
- Confirm local support: give a servicing dealer the exact article number and ask about inspection, battery replacement and parts support.
- Demonstrate advertised connectivity: nearby Bluetooth operation is different from remote cellular control. Check the fitted hardware and the matching manual rather than assuming every 315 has the same app features.
Compare the purchase price plus installation, an initial service, likely consumables and any connectivity costs with an itemised new-mower quote. If the seller cannot demonstrate the machine, treat its condition as unknown.
What has changed in current Automowers?
Husqvarna’s 2026 UK NERA announcement introduces the 405VE, 410VE, 430V and 450V with camera-based object detection and EPOS satellite technology for virtual boundaries. Those capabilities should not be attributed to an original 315.
As a concrete UK example, the 405VE NERA lists 900 m² for systematic mowing and 600 m² for its irregular pattern. Its cloud installation requires cellular or Wi-Fi coverage across the lawn; a separate reference station is an alternative where internet coverage is unavailable. Ask for a site assessment of reception, trees, buildings and boundary layout. Wire-free does not mean installation-free.
US shoppers should compare the local range, including the Automower 410 iQ, rather than treating UK NERA names as interchangeable. The US listing describes a half-acre model and an included reference station, with cloud coverage limited to supported locations. Check cutting height, local service, package contents and installation requirements for the exact regional model.
Safe use and ongoing care
Follow the matching manual: keep people and animals out of the work area, clear toys and debris, and switch the mower off before inspection or maintenance. The manual warns that nocturnal animals such as hedgehogs can be harmed; choose daylight mowing times and check the lawn before operation. Sensors do not replace these precautions.
Budget time for cleaning, blade checks, boundary-wire repairs and seasonal storage. Use the older model’s cleaning instructions; do not assume a washing method advertised for a newer mower is suitable for a 315.
A used 315 is worth considering when its condition, installation and local support are established and the total cost remains attractive. If those are uncertain, obtain a current-model installation quote before committing. Our older WORX Landroid article offers another historical model reference; it is not a current comparison test.
